Welcome to the City of South Lake Tahoe’s participatory budgeting initiative!

Participatory budgeting is a democratic process that empowers community members to have an influence in how a portion of public funds are allocated and spent. Participatory budgeting allows citizens to prioritize projects and initiatives by allocating a defined amount of funds to projects that are important to them. Participatory budgeting can lead to more efficient and effective use of resources by leveraging local knowledge and expertise, ultimately resulting in projects and initiatives that better serve the community as a whole. By actively involving individuals from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods, including traditionally marginalized groups like youth and economically disadvantaged communities, participatory budgeting ensures that solutions are rooted in the realities and priorities of those most affected.

Projects included in the participatory budgeting initiative have been selected from the City’s Capital Improvement Plan. Citizens can allocate $2 million in funding towards the projects that they determine are the highest priority for the community. The survey will not allow you to allocate more than $2, 000,000, ensuring fiscal responsibility in the allocation of funds. If you would like to review the list of projects prior to taking the survey, visit https://cityofslt.us/2405/Participatory-Budgeting

The City Council will use the survey results in their discussion during the Budget Workshop scheduled for August 27 at 9am. The survey and the Budget Workshop are two great ways to get involved in your community’s budget priorities as they are being set. Thank you for caring about our great city and have fun budgeting!
