1. Street Resurfacing ($1,000,000)
What percentage of the total budget should go toward street resurfacing?
Resurfacing is necessary to address streets that have deteriorated, are safety hazards and are generally in poor condition. Residents, businesses and visitors to the 29th Ward will benefit from improved safety when traveling in the ward.
Menu money is the only available funding for residential street resurfacing in Chicago’s Wards.
Thanks to a federal subsidy, the cost for the first five blocks of resurfaced streets is $43,500 per block. The average cost for each street resurfaced in addition to the initial five is $72,000 per block.

2. Columbus Park Tennis Court Flood Lights ($1,800)
The installation of lights will help illuminate the park side of the residential street along Adams, near Austin Boulevard where the area is extremely dark and pedestrians’ vision is slightly impaired when walking along the sidewalk.

3. Pedestrian Crosswalk and Safety Island Across North Ave ($160,000)
Construct a highly visible pedestrian crossing with extended curbs to alert automobile traffic, combined with a refuge island, mid-block between Natchez and Nagle Avenue. This location would safely connect businesses, multiple bus stops, the Children’s Museum, and medical facilities.

4. Community Garden Improvements ($15,000)
This project focuses on protecting and improving gardens features such as upgrading fencing, crushed stone, weed barrier, and wood curbing in three community gardens: Rutherford Sayre Park Community Garden, Harambee Community Garden, and Austin Green Team Community Garden

5. Light Pole Identifiers ($160,000)
To create consistency throughout the community, and to help fulfill a goal of the “Austin Quality of Life Plan,” the installation of decorated metal signs on light poles will bring beauty and unity to our community. These identifiers will be installed along the west side of Central Avenue, and east side of Austin Boulevard.

6. West Corcoran Place Improvements ($90,000)
The installation of Visual art representing the spirit and culture of Austin, to invoke a sense of community and engage pedestrian and drivers with murals along the exterior wall of the El tracks on the North side of Corcoran and Underpasses at Mayfield, Menard and Parkside. The art will include Murals and Chalk Walls for self-expression with Architectural Spot Lighting of murals and, Public Sculptures in wood, metal and stone.

7. Garbage Cans ($110,000)
To create consistency throughout the community, and help fulfill a goal of the “Austin Quality of Life Plan,” the installation of garbage cans will help reduce the dumping of debris along the west side of Central Avenue, and east side of Austin Boulevard. The garbage cans will be clearly marked with the name “Austin Community.”
