Street Resurfacing

1. Street Resurfacing

What percentage of the total budget should go toward street resurfacing?

Resurfacing is necessary to address streets and sidewalks that have deteriorated, are safety hazards and are generally in poor condition. Residents, businesses and visitors to the 40th Ward will benefit from improved safety when traveling in the ward.

Menu money is the only available funding for residential street and sidewalk resurfacing in Chicago’s wards. Thanks to a federal subsidy, the cost for the first five blocks of resurfaced streets is $43,500 per block. The average cost for each street resurfaced in addition the initial five is $72,000.

Projects

A. Lighting Improvements

This request involves replacing a light fixture that was damaged by the summer storm.

Estimated Cost: $91,000

B. Tree Planting

Due to pests, storms, improper maintenance, the number of trees have been reduced throughout the ward. Trees benefit the neighborhood in various ways such as reducing flooding, reduce urban heat spots, increase property values, and increase residents’ general sense of well-being. Especially during these tough COVID-19 days, we are spending a lot of time close to home. Trees help beautify and uplift spirits.

Estimated Cost: $50,000

Location: 1762 W Thomas Ave, 4719 N Talman Ave, Catalpa Beautification

C. Reading Garden Mosaic at the Chicago Public Library Budlong Woods Branch

This project is centrally located in the 40th Ward, at the key intersection of Lincoln and Bryn Mawr Avenues. The CPL Budlong Woods Branch is the only public library located within the ward and, as such, impacts and enhances the entire ward.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Chicago Public Library Budlong Woods Branch

D. Outdoor Fitness Equipment in Emmerson Park

It would be beneficial to have an outdoor workout area in the Edgewater neighborhood. A place where people can exercise outdoors who do not have access to a gym or home exercise equipment.

Estimated Cost: $50,000

Location: Emmerson Park

E. Installation of Sand Volleyball Court with Permanent Volleyball Posts and Nets in River Park

River Park needs a permanent volleyball court/net. Currently, groups have to come and set up their bet at the sand court. The court has been busy/full nearly every morning this summer. Clearly, this is a need for more volleyball courts in the area.

Estimated Cost: $75,000

Location: River Park
