Technology for Durham Public Middle and High Schools

This project will provide Durham Public Schools with funds to purchase and replace Epson Brightlink 685 Wi Projectors used in classrooms at the following high school and middle school: Northern High, Brogden Middle School, Carrington Middle School, Lucas Middle School, Neal Magnet Middle. DPS administration identified a need for working projectors in the classrooms as a major priority. Teachers rely on projectors every day, which are used for lessons, conducting research, watching educational videos and solving problems among many other things.

Historic Monuments Along the Fayetteville St. Corridor

Signs, flags, and artistic bus benches will be placed along the corridor to capture written and pictorial history of past and present Fayetteville Street local heroes and historical events that shaped the 12 communities, and in totality, the city of Durham.

LGBTQ Youth Center (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning)

The LGBTQ Center of Durham is proposing the creation of an LGBTQ+ Youth Center that will allow the current center to expand its mission to intentionally focus on the City of Durham’s LGBTQ+ youth population. This center will function as the singular physical hub of LGBTQ+ youth resources that currently scatter the city and increase their reach. The space will value and honor youth leadership and wisdom while focusing on enhancing individual agency and empowerment. It will also feature targeted programming and educational events designed to support youth in the development of positive self-concept, resiliency, building social and vocational skills, and leadership skills.

Lakeview Park Improvements

There are many items that need to be repaired or replaced within the playground, including the locked gate at the front. This project would repair the restroom, which is currently locked and has structural damages; the water fountain needs to be replaced. It would also repair cracks in the basketball court, hoops and benches would be replaced, and bleachers would be added. Additionally, the project would level the sidewalk leading to the basketball courts. At the baseball field, the project would repair damaged fencing and replace rusted team benches. Playground equipment would be upgraded, with equipment for children ages 5 to 12, with ADA accommodations. An emergency phone light will be added for safety. Open space near the front of park there will be picnic tables and grills added for family enjoyment that are ADA. There are lots of spaces that hold water; that can be turned into rain gardens. The cross-walk needs to be repainted for safety reasons. Mulch, soil, and plants will be needed for rain garden areas. Wood Fiber Chips will be used in play areas for safe fall protection areas. There will also be a concert stage for community events within the park.

Science Technology, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) and Entrepreneurship Youth Center

A STEM and Entrepreneurship program where youth will for youth build robots, learn how to code, participate in other STEM projects and learn leadership and entrepreneurial skills through LEGO robotics courses, startup clinics, weekly mentorship sessions, and online computer coding programs. This will provide access and opportunities to align our urban youth with access to job training, entrepreneurial coaching, community engagement opportunities, educational services, and the kinds of positive reinforcement that will advance their intellectual and social interests. eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. is the project sponsor and it is a non-profit organization

Hillside Park Improvements

The following three projects are intended to improve Hillside Park by remodeling existing structures in and around the park to promote safety, inclusivity, and the overall benefit to park patrons and the surrounding communities. The proposed projects will include increased lighting to the main programming areas of the park including but not limited to the tennis courts, amphitheater, and playground. Partnered with the increase lighting, the strategic use of CPTED principles (crime prevention through environmental design) will be used to maximize spill light and increase overall safety. In addition to the aforementioned projects, there are community members that are requesting for the resurfacing of the tennis courts, installing natural seating at the amphitheater, and upgrading or replacing the existing playground with an ADA accessible play structure able to accommodate patrons of all abilities.
