Parks & Recreation

11. Solomon Elementary School Playground and Site Improvements

The playground and expansive asphalt schoolyard at Solomon Elementary School in North Park are vital public spaces for families throughout the year despite a lack of seating. The rubber safety surface below the play equipment is completely broken in many locations, and the schoolyard does not incorporate adequate outdoor teaching facilities. Building from a robust public survey conducted by the principal of Solomon Elementary, menu money would be spent on the highest concerns for playground safety repairs, durable public benches, and natural play equipment that can serve as an outdoor classroom.

Estimated Cost: $70,000

Location: Solomon Elementary School, 6206 N. Hamlin Ave.

12. North Park Village Nature Center Renovation

This project will fund the modernization of the North Park Village Nature Center. The Lobby and Discovery Room of North Park Village Nature Center were originally built 105 years ago, and it was converted to a Nature Center 40 years ago. The hospital tiles on the walls and old shelving units require modernization. This project will repurpose the ash wood from fallen trees for walls in the lobby, remove old cabinets and fixtures in the Discovery Room, allow room for updated nature displays, and improve the overall setting for nature education. The proposed renovation budget is a total of $60,000. A generous donor has provided $30,000; this funding will provide the necessary matching funds to complete the project.

Estimated Cost: $30,000

Location: North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Rd.

13. Sauganash Park Baseball Diamond Improvements

Sauganash Park has 2 baseball diamonds in need of replacement. Frequent flooding even after moderate rain, overgrown weeds, and small holes have become all too common in recent years, causing frequent cancellation of games. The baseball league that plays at Sauganash Park is one of the 5 largest leagues in Chicago and the park is very busy with camps during the summer months.

Estimated Cost: $140,000

Location: Sauganash Park, 5861 N. Kostner Ave.

14. Eugene Field Park Outdoor Fitness Equipment

Installation of outdoor fitness equipment at Eugene Field Park, to allow for strength training and cardio workouts in a safe, outdoor space, without a gym membership. This could include several pieces of equipment for a total body workout.

Estimated Cost: $50,000

Location: Eugene Field Park, 5100 N. Ridgeway Ave.

15. Little Gompers Path Improvements

Gompers Park has a beautiful fishing lagoon that offers peaceful respite and recreation for all park users. Sinking pathways have led to frequent flooding that cuts off access to this natural public space. Menu funds would be used toward an engineering study of the severe pathway sinking problem, and the study and construction of a greatly needed path from a parking lot that is not ADA accessible.

Estimated Cost: $110,000

Location: Gompers Park, 4222 W. Foster Ave.

Safety & Environment

16. Bike Lanes and Traffic Calming on W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

In the past 20 years, developing a safe bicycle infrastructure has been a big part of the City of Chicago’s commitment to improving residents’ quality of life. Cycling is an increasingly popular way to commute, exercise, and relax. Bryn Mawr is a designated bike route, but it has minimal signage and suffers from chokepoints where cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians compete for space. Marked, protected bike lanes would increase overall safety for all. Bryn Mawr is critical to the Chicago Streets for Cycling Plan as it serves as the main link between the North Shore Channel Trail (5500 N, 3100 W) and the Sauganash/Valley Line Trail (5600 N, 4300 W). These improvements would not just benefit bicyclists, they would also make our streets safer by clearly indicating to drivers and pedestrians where to expect to see cyclists. This project would connect the neighborhoods of North Mayfair, North Park, Brynford Park, Sauganash, Sauganash Park, Peterson Park, and Albany Park. Additionally, users will bike through the North Park business district. Additionally, to promote greater public safety for bikers and pedestrians alike, this proposal also includes traffic calming measures, such as pavement markings and stop signs.

Estimated Cost: $175,000

Location: W. Bryn Mawr Ave., from North Shore Channel Trail to Skokie Valley Line Trail.

17. Repave the 4800 block of W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

This block of pavement has extensive potholes, cracks, and loose gravel, which can damage passing cars and be dangerous or difficult to access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Estimated Cost: $50,000

Location: 4800 block of W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

18. Repave the 6100 block of N. Knox Ave.

This block of pavement has extensive potholes, cracks, and loose gravel, which can damage passing cars and be dangerous or difficult to access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Estimated Cost: $50,000

Location: 6100 block of N. Knox Ave.

19. Child-safe Crossing at the Intersection of N. Kolmar Ave. and W. Carmen Ave.

Install a roundabout to slow down traffic and thereby keep children safe while crossing to and from the North Mayfair Playlot Park.

Estimated Cost: $15,000

Location: Intersection of N. Kolmar Ave. and W. Carmen Ave.

20. Left Turn Lane at the Intersection of N. Pulaski Rd. and W. Devon Ave.

Left turns at this intersection are difficult and dangerous due to speeding cars and limited visibility. Long lines of cars trying to turn left can wait through 3-4 cycles before making it through the intersection. This causes congestion for everyone. Creating a dedicated turn lane will help reduce the congestion and make it easier for cars to turn left.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Intersection of N. Pulaski Rd. and W. Devon Ave.

21. Bump Outs at the Intersection of N. Keating Ave. and W. Peterson Ave.

Many families use this intersection to travel to and from Sauganash Elementary. The street’s width and traffic’s speed make crossing here dangerous, especially with cars zooming by in the outside lanes. Because it is so close to N. Cicero Ave., is not a good place for a traffic light or stop sign. Bump outs will reduce the total crossing distance for pedestrians and provide speed-reducing traffic calming for passing drivers, helping pedestrians feel safer.

Estimated Cost: $30,000

Location: Intersection of N. Keating Ave. and W. Peterson Ave.

22. Improved Pedestrian Crossing and Traffic Calming at the Intersection of N. Avers Ave. and W. Foster Ave.

Due to the bridge’s geometry to the east of the intersection and the width of the roadway, among other factors, vehicles often speed through this intersection and do not yield to pedestrians, despite it being adjacent to Eugene Field Park, a major pedestrian generator. Providing additional pavement markings, signage and other improvements will encourage drivers to look out for pedestrians and stop when pedestrians attempt to cross W. Foster Ave. Additionally, traffic calming will help reduce driver speeds, improving the overall safety of pedestrians and bicyclists passing through.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Intersection of N. Avers Ave. and W. Foster Ave.
