Pedestrian Countdown Signal at Wilson & Ashland

This item would update the pedestrian traffic signals at the intersection of Ashland & Wilson to ensure that pedestrian signals include countdown timers. One of the corners of this intersection features a daycare. Improvements could also include pushbuttons that activate audible and vibrotactile signals informing pedestrians of their ability to cross.

Estimated Cost: $120,000

Location: Wilson & Ashland

Pedestrian Safety Improvements at Addison & Claremont

This item would fund pedestrian safety improvements in the form of curb extensions and/or Speed Feedback Signals at the intersection of Addison & Claremont. This unsignalized intersection is located one block east of Lane Tech High School and one block south of Bell Elementary School. Curb extensions extend the sidewalk out into the parking lane to decrease the distance pedestrians need to cross, thereby increasing pedestrian visibility to oncoming cars and decreasing traffic speeds. Speed Feedback Signs show the speed at which drivers are going. Studies indicate that they are effective at slowing 80% of drivers.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Addison & Claremont

Bike Boxes on Lincoln Ave

This item would fund cycling improvements at multiple signalized intersections along Lincoln Ave in the form of green painted bike boxes. Bike boxes are designated areas at a signalized intersection that provide cyclists with a safe and visible way to get ahead of queuing traffic during the red signal phase. This helps make them more visible to drivers, as well as helping them make left turns and avoiding right hook-type crashes.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Lincoln Ave

Traffic Calming on Ainslie between Western and Damen

This item would fund traffic calming improvements along Ainslie St between Western and Damen (in partnership with the 40th Ward). This stretch of Ainslie sees increased vehicular speeds with drivers using it as a cut-through to avoid Lawrence Ave. Slowing traffic (through curb extensions or other means) is all the more important that Ainslie features a school and will provide an important cycling connection between the future Lincoln Ave protected bike lane west of Western and existing cycling facilities on Leavitt and Damen.

Estimated Cost: $72,000

Location: Western and Damen

Contraflow Bike Lane on Wolcott from Berteau to Leland

This item would fund the striping of a northbound contraflow bike lane on Wolcott from Berteau to Leland. Wolcott is a calm residential street that features a traffic light to cross Montrose, making it a safe alternative for people feeling unsafe cycling on the Damen bike lane. The contraflow lane would allow cyclists to use Wolcott northbound as well as southbound, safely connecting to the existing Berteau Neighborhood Greenway to the south and the incoming Leland Neighborhood Greenway to the north (those greenways in turn connect to existing and future sections of the bike network including the Leavitt Greenway, Clark St protected bike lane, and facilities planned for Ravenswood north of Leland).

Estimated Cost: $120,000

Location: Wolcott from Berteau to Leland

Curb Extensions at Montrose & Greenview

This item would fund pedestrian safety improvements in the form of curb extensions at the intersection of Montrose & Greenview. This intersection features a Stop Sign that is routinely ignored by drivers on Montrose. Curb extensions extend the sidewalk out into the parking lane to decrease the distance pedestrians need to cross, thereby increasing pedestrian visibility to oncoming cars and decreasing traffic speeds.

Estimated Cost: $100,000

Location: Montrose & Greenview
