Youth

Basketball Court Upgrades

Upgrade an outdoor basketball court! This project will resurface a court most in need of repairs, paint new lines, and install adjustable hoops for inclusive play for all ages in important community locations.

Estimated Cost: $350,000

Moses Youth Center Upgrade

Let’s upgrade the Moses Youth Center! This project will add comfortable new furniture for the entire youth center, improve the gym storage for moveable equipment, and provide a new music studio for young people to use.

Funding for High School Clubs

Student clubs at CRLS currently do many great things for our community: volunteering, tutoring, academic and professional development, and more. Let’s provide funding to help expand their ability to engage in the community and beyond!

Girls’ Empowerment Sports Events

Expand the Cambridge Sports Night for Girls to include multiple events each year for youth in elementary and upper school. These fun events let young girls try different sports in a supportive community setting!

Location: War Memorial, Danehy Park, CPS School gyms, and others for up to three years.

   

Transportation, Streets, and Sidewalks

Accessible Mats for Public Events

Cambridge hosts many outdoor events each year. Accessible mats can lay over unpaved terrain to ensure that more people can enjoy the beautiful green space of these events. These mats support families with strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids.

Estimated Cost: $20,000

Location: Outdoor City events for up to three years.

   

Slower Speeds for Safer Streets

Install 48 speed humps on key streets in Cambridge to reduce vehicle speeds. Speed humps enhance pedestrian safety, create safer, more livable neighborhoods. This project aims to address speeding issues and improve overall road safety.

Estimated Cost: $250,000

Location: Side streets running perpendicular to main roads.

   

Fun, Educational Bike Events for Adults

Expand the City’s bike safety education offerings by providing learn-to-bike and beginner urban cycling workshops for adults. More educational opportunities will empower more people to feel safe and comfortable using bikes to get around the city.

Estimated Cost: $110,000

Location: Public parks, empty parking lots, bike paths for up to 2 years.

   

Submersible Wheelchairs at Gold Star Pool

Purchase submersible wheelchairs for people with mobility disabilities to use for swimming at the Gold Star Pool and on beach field trips. These wheelchairs will increase access to physical activity, recreation, and community participation.

Estimated Cost: $12,000

Location: Gold Star Pool.

   

Environment

Electric Vehicle Chargers

Install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at 3 locations with 10 charging heads. EV adoption is growing steadily as measured by EV charging station data collected by the city. This proposal responds to a strong demand from residents who have indicated a need for more publicly available EV chargers.

Estimated Cost: $200,000

Location: 10 charging heads at 3 locations to be determined.

   

Build a Pollinator Garden in a City Park

Pollinator gardens are gardens specifically for native plant species that provide pollinator resources for local wildlife. This project will design and plant a pollinator garden within a city park to attract and nourish native pollinators!

Estimated Cost: $75,000

Location: To be determined based on need and impact assessments.

   

Mobile Center for Hard-to-Recycle Items

Instead of going to the Recycling Center, let the Recycle Center come to you! At community events, the Mobile Center can help residents recycle items without having to cross the city. Help recycle items like e-waste, books, batteries, plastic bags, and more.

Estimated Cost: $75,000

Location: In locations citywide for up to three years.

   

Install Safe Disposal Boxes for Sharp Items

Install boxes for safe disposal of needles, lancets, or other sharp medical tools. These boxes would be located in high-need areas to provide more safe, convenient disposal options for sharps in the city.

Estimated Cost: $30,000

Location: Six high-need places with waste collection for up to three years.

   

Facilities, Parks, and Recreation

Shoot for the Stars : Public STEAM Programs

Let’s support astronomy and STEAM programs at Cambridge Public Libraries to help teach about the wonders of the night sky in partnership with local astronomy and STEAM organizations.

Estimated Cost: $15,000

Location: Cambridge Public Libraries for up to three years.

   

Bring Adventure Play to Cambridge

Bring adventure play to Cambridge kids! Physical adventure play promotes supervised risk-taking and fun. Ongoing events and training would help community partners to facilitate a new type of play that helps foster kids’ imagination.

Estimated Cost: $150,000

Location: Program locations throughout Cambridge for up to three years.

   

Free Sunscreen in City Parks

Keep Cambridge healthy and extend play time by adding free sunscreen dispensers to city parks and playgrounds! This project will fund dispenser installation and ongoing maintenance for three years.

Estimated Cost: $20,000

Location: Parks throughout the city for up to three years.

   

Improve Parks with Shade Structures and Seating

Make parks and dog parks more comfortable for visitors by building one to two shelters with seating for rainy or sunny days. This project would also fund additional benches and tables in various parks across the city.

Community Resources

Free Lice Combs in Public Schools

Provide free, professional-quality lice combs during outbreaks to ease costs to families. These combs have dense bristles that are recommended for wash treatments and are more effective than standard combs. Read more...

Location: All Cambridge Public Elementary and Upper schools.

   

Mobile Pet Care

Improve access to veterinary care for residents with financial or mobility challenges. This proposal will provide free check-ups, vaccine clinics, grooming, dental care, and other services to pets of residents in need.

Location: Low-income housing, senior living facilities, and more for up to three years.

   

Live Captioning Accessibility for City Meetings

Let’s make public meetings more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people! This proposal will fund portable screens and staffing for live transcriptions of public meetings in city-owned buildings.

Estimated Cost: $250,000

Location: City-owned buildings, public meeting spaces for up to three years.

   

Welcome Baby Boxes for New Parents

Let’s support new parents! Baby supplies are expensive and caring for a newborn is hard. This proposal will provide baby supplies for new parents and promote information on community resources to help ease the transition into parenting. Read more...
