Waste Management Education Campaign
Leverage local artists to develop an educational campaign about proper disposal of recyclables, trash and compost. This approach will decrease waste, reduce recycling/compost contamination and reduce rats by improving sanitation.
Estimated Cost: $85,000
Location: Citywide
Urban Micro-Forests for Cambridge
Pockets of unique trees, densely planted at select locations throughout the city, will beautify, educate, and help combat climate change. Approximately 50 trees will be planted with educational signage, bringing the forest into Cambridge.
Estimated Cost: $85,000
Location: Location TBD
Fast Response High Visibility Fire Hydrant Markers
Install high-visibility markers on fire hydrants around town to increase safety for all residents and reduce response time of the fire department by improving ease of locating hydrants in emergencies, at night, and in the snow.
Estimated Cost: $8,000
Location: TBD by Cambridge Fire Department
Rain Gardens for Resilience
Rain gardens are engineered to use specific soil and plants that absorb and filter stormwater, and are a cost-effective, beautiful way to naturally clean runoff and protect from flooding. Green infrastructure has never looked so good!
Estimated Cost: $120,000
Location: Two Locations TBD consistent with Climate Adaptation Plan
Open Our Doors - Automatic Door Openers on Public Buildings
Many city buildings have heavy doors without automatic openers, often making access to these buildings a challenge. Touchless automatic door openers benefit those who are elderly, pregnant, using wheelchairs or walkers, pushing strollers, concerned about germs, or anyone who has their hands full.
Estimated Cost: $50,000
Location: Five City Buildings Throughout Cambridge
Swinging into Inclusivity
Place several inclusive swing sets in parks to allow children with mobility disabilities to play with able bodied children. This will take a stand against ableism by enabling kids of all abilities to play together.
Estimated Cost: $40,000
Location: School parks or public playgrounds near schools
Bike Signals at Busy Intersections
Navigating intersections can be confusing. Adding bike signals to busy intersections will help cyclists safely navigate intersections and make the roads more predictable and friendly for all.
Estimated Cost: $40,000
Location: Dangerous intersections on major streets
Keep Cambridge Cleaner
Install 6 touchless, pest-resistant Big Belly trash and recycling compactors in most needed areas. Solar-powered and more efficient than traditional bins, Big Bellies will be hands-free, reduce pests (like rats) and keep streets cleaner.
Estimated Cost: $45,000
Location: As most needed throughout Cambridge
Listen Up! Public Meeting Space Hearing Technology
Increase accessibility for people with hearing disabilities by installing technology that provides direct audio input to most hearing aid and cochlear implant users in one or more public meeting spaces such as a library or City Hall meeting room.
Estimated Cost: $150,000
Location: Public meeting space
Bridging the Digital Divide
To help address digital equity, purchase 100 Chromebooks and 75 mobile hotspots (with a 2-year subscription) for the Community Learning Center and Public Library to better serve their adult learners and borrowers.
Estimated Cost: $95,000
Location: Community Learning Center, Cambridge Public Library
Add Color to our Youth Centers
Paint the youth buildings in Cambridge with colors and patterns. Students and families from each youth center would participate in deciding the colors/design for each building and help with the painting to increase community involvement.
